diary. for more on this, i'm joined by "new york times" reporter steven lee myers. and daniel byman, director of the center for peace and security studies at georgetown university. steven lee myers, let me start with you. two top administration officials say it was terrorism. one makes a direct link to an al qaeda group but how much and what exactly is known at this point about the attack in benghazi? >> well, i think administration is clearly trying to learn more. from the first day they've launched an investigation headed by the f.b.i., of course. then you have an internal review. and they've been very careful not to jump to conclusions, if you will. and that's led them to sort of change-- not change, evolve their story a little bit each day. you learn a little bit more. the question of whether or not it was a terrorist attack. initially it seemed to be more of a mob or riot that was prompted by the video that's been circulating and causing protests across the region. that now seems not to have been the case. it seems to have been a much more organized attack that was perhaps spar

stevens, there are more questions than answers. why hasn't the fbi set foot on the crime scene? why was the white house so late in calling it a terrorist attack? why is there so much conflicting information coming in from the obama administration? just yesterday, the secretary of state hillary clinton spoke about an al qaeda group's link to extremists in benghazi specifically and seemed to tie it to the attack on the consulate. let me quote her. quote, for sometime, al qaeda in the islamic maghreb and other groups have launched attacks and kidnappings from noern mali. now with a larger safe haven and increased freedom to maneuver terrorists are seeking to extend their reach and their networks in multiple directions and they are working with other violent extremists to undermine the democratic transitions under way in north africa as we tragically saw in benghazi. but, but a senior state department official later said mrs. clinton was speaking in more general terms. let me just provide a little context with fran townsend. you're a national security contributor and

. after losing chris stevens and the other americans there, there's a lot of pressure, a lot of people are pressuring susan rice to make more of a comment on the attack in the libya, frankly, they want her to backtrack her comments on the sunday morning talk shows when she said, oh, this was spore rad dick. you know, what should she do? what would you advise her to do? >> my guess is she was told to take one for the team, and they gave her this line, and she went out and peddled it on five sunday morning shows. she had no, no basis for any independent knowledge of what happened in libya. but i think, really, the problem is the administration's. it was an ideological response, they didn't want to admit that we had problems with al-qaeda still in libya, and now they're going to pay a price in terms of their credibility. i think if this gets investigated more thoroughly, it'll have an election impact. cheryl: once his diary came out, i think that's where -- >> yeah. they had no answer for that, basically. cheryl: ambassador john bolton, thank you. nice to see you, as always. >>> still to
